Workers at Prairie Farms in Fort Wayne have ratified a powerful new four-year contract, bringing stability and security after weeks of uncertainty about the future of the plant.

These gains are particularly critical at a time when workers everywhere are struggling with the rising cost of living. With inflation driving up the price of food, housing, and everyday necessities, significant wage increases like these ensure Prairie Farms workers and their families can better keep up and move forward…

Three years ago, a handful of workers started having quiet conversations in between unloading trucks and setting up stalls. They work at GrowNYC, a nonprofit organization that facilitates greenmarkets, farmstands, gardens, and educational programs across New York City to provide community-enriching services. Workers keep farmers markets running, connect communities with healthy food, and support environmental education year-round, which includes providing fresh, local food access, running community gardens and teaching spaces, and delivering sustainability and nutrition education to New Yorkers in all five boroughs. 

While passionate about their mission-driven organization, workers were tired of working in the blazing sun without shade, freezing winds without proper gear, and tired of being treated like they were replaceable. Some were seasonal workers who came back year after year but never had any guarantee they’d be rehired. Others faced harassment from customers, sometimes sexual harassment, with no clear policy to protect them. There was no fair pay for speaking another language, even though many of them translated daily for shoppers and vendors.

That’s when they reached out to the RWDSU…

Members of the RWDSU Southeast Council at Autoneum in Aiken, South Carolina are making a difference in their community by ensuring local students have the tools they need to succeed. As the new school year began, Autoneum members came together to fill backpacks with school supplies for students at North Aiken Elementary School.

The effort was part of a community-wide school supply drive, with the RWDSU Southeast Council donating supplies alongside other local partners. Together, they provided essential items like notebooks, pencils, crayons, and backpacks to help relieve the financial burden many families face during back-to-school season…

That commitment was on full display this year as the union celebrated the achievements of its Paulette Fialkoff-Amodeo Scholarship recipients. Thanks to the newly established Local 1102 Charitable Trust Fund, scholarship awards reached new heights this year, allowing the union to provide even greater support for students pursuing their education.
