Building a Stronger Union: RWDSU Stewards Training in Kansas City
On February 18, 2026, an impactful Stewards Training was held in Kansas City, Missouri, reinforcing one of the most important investments a union can make: developing strong, informed workplace leaders.
The training brought together members of RWDSU Local 184L representing workers at Mars (formerly Kellanova) who make Cheez-It and other cracker products, along with members of RWDSU Local 125 who work at Coca-Cola and the National Beef company.
The session was led by RWDSU National Field Director Jason Ware, with assistance from Deputy Director Bob Dixon and Business Agent Dennis Williams.
Why Steward Trainings Matter
Shop stewards are the frontline of our union. They are the first call when a member has a question, a concern, or needs representation. They enforce the contract, protect workers’ rights, and serve as the bridge between the membership and union leadership.
Taking the time to hold steward trainings is not just about reviewing procedures; it’s about building confidence, sharpening skills, and strengthening solidarity. When stewards are well-resourced, members are better represented. When members feel supported and protected, our union grows stronger.
In Kansas City, that commitment was clear.
Stewards were fully engaged throughout the day, eagerly participating in hands-on exercises designed to mirror real workplace challenges. Divided into groups, they identified issues, practiced problem-solving strategies, and worked collaboratively to find solutions that would benefit their co-workers. The discussions were energetic and thoughtful, with many strong questions focused on how to better serve and defend their memberships.
Several participants even stayed late to continue learning and gathering additional insight from the expert staff, a powerful reflection of their dedication to their fellow members.
Investing in Our Future
Steward development is an investment in RWDSU’s future. Every trained steward strengthens contract enforcement, increases workplace unity, and builds leadership from within. By equipping members with the tools and knowledge they need, we are not only addressing today’s challenges, we are preparing for tomorrow’s fights.
Richard Connally, President of RWDSU Local 184L, and his team, along with Larry Smith, President of the RWDSU Central States Council, hosted this important event and recognized that ongoing training like this strengthens RWDSU. Through continued education, engagement, and leadership development, RWDSU is building a stronger union, workplace by workplace, steward by steward thanks to regional and local leaders like Larry and Richard and our dedicated staff.
