Local 338 Shop Steward Honored for Outstanding Service to Her Community
RWDSU Local 338 proudly congratulates Angie Finerty, a longtime shop steward at the Bayside Stop & Shop, who was recently honored by Congresswoman Grace Meng for her many years of service and dedication to working people.
Angie, a 38-year member, was recognized at an event celebrating union members from across the labor movement, including representatives from the IBEW, Carpenters, and other building trades. She was the only honoree representing retail workers and one of the longest-serving shop stewards in attendance.
Angie began her career in 1988 as a part-time employee at Waldbaum’s in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York while raising her children. Over the years, she worked in several stores, developing a strong interest in floral design, and helping support and grow floral departments in multiple departments. She continued her career with Stop & Shop and now serves as the head clerk.
Her union involvement grew naturally. After the store’s shop steward retired, Angie was elected to step into the role. She takes pride in standing up for her co-workers, resolving workplace issues, and ensuring their rights are protected. She credits the union representatives she has worked with over the years, including Local 338 President John Durso, for always being responsive and supportive.
This past contract cycle marked another milestone when Angie sat at the bargaining table for the first time as a member of the negotiating committee. She described the experience as “eye-opening,” as they fought and won fair wage increases across the board while protecting the medical benefits members rely on.
As she approaches her work anniversary this March, Angie remains actively engaged with the union and in helping her fellow union members, whenever she is needed. Her advice to members: “Stay aware, stay connected, and stay in touch with your union reps – they’re always there when you need them most.”
