Strength in Solidarity: From the Taproom to the Dispensary

Whether it’s the quiet streets of Sleepy Hollow or the bustling growth of the cannabis industry in Syracuse, the power of Local 338 is driven by members who look out for one another. This month, we’re spotlighting two members, Amelia Curry and Zak Warner, who demonstrate that while our workplaces may look different, our commitment to supporting our coworkers remains the same.

The Heart of the Shop

For Amelia Curry, a bartender and server at DiCicco & Sons, the workplace feels like family. Over her four years at the Sleepy Hollow store, she has evolved from a cashier into a mentor for her team. For Amelia, being a union member means ensuring the next generation of workers isn't left to navigate their rights alone.

"A lot of younger workers may not have someone guiding them," Amelia says. "The union helps you get things like paid time off, insurance, and benefits, these can really help them get by."

When she isn't helping a customer find their new favorite beer, Amelia is a full-time psychology major at Pace University. She’s training to be a high school counselor, proving that the support she offers her union siblings today is just the beginning of a lifelong career dedicated to helping others through difficult situations.

A New Chapter, A Familiar Voice

While Amelia is building a future for students, Zak Warner is helping build the foundation of a brand-new industry. After a career change in 2024, Zak joined RISE Dispensary in Syracuse. Coming from a long line of union members, Zak understood instinctively that a new industry needs a strong voice to ensure it grows fairly.

His coworkers recognized that passion early on, electing him as their shop steward. Zak recently proved the power of that role when he successfully worked with the union to secure unpaid ratification bonuses for his entire team.

"The most important part is being someone people feel comfortable coming to," Zak explains. "Ask questions, stay informed, and know your rights."

Stronger Together

Amelia and Zak represent the best of Local 338: workers who are dedicated to their craft but even more dedicated to their community. Whether through Amelia’s mentorship or Zak’s advocacy, they remind us that a union is only as strong as the members who step up to guide the way.
