Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01), recently introduced the American Protein Processing Modernization Act, which would provide a permanent framework to increase poultry and pork line speeds, a clear danger to workers and America’s food supply. Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which represents over 15,000 poultry workers at facilities across the southern United States, as well as meatpacking and processing workers in other parts of the country issued the following statement:
It’s being reported that NYC Mayor Adams will soon veto Intro 1135, which closes the “Instacart Loophole” allowing third-party grocery delivery apps to pay their workers far below the minimum wage of $21.44 an hour that city law mandates restaurant delivery workers receive. InstaCart workers have reported earning as low as $2 an hour delivering groceries due to this loophole.
Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), announced his endorsement of the Soloviev and Mohegan Freedom Plaza development, calling it, “one of the most significant opportunities in a generation to create good, union jobs for working New Yorkers.”
“What we’ve learned today is that Tyson Foods was in fact at fault for our member’s near life ending injuries, but a worker's life can never be monetarily valued, and it certainly cannot be valued at a few thousand dollars. OSHA’s decision to issue only modest fines in the wake of the devastating boiler explosion at Tyson’s Camilla, Georgia poultry plant is the true embodiment of a broken system that lacks the teeth to protect workers….
