RWDSU’s Sandra Lee Williams Honored by NAACP Award

Sandra Lee Williams, Deputy Political Director of the RWDSU, was recently awarded the Benjamin L. Hooks Keeper of the Flame Award by the NAACP at their National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. This esteemed recognition honors individuals who continue to make a powerful impact on civil rights, labor, and community justice. Named for the legendary Benjamin L. Hooks, the fifth Executive Director of the NAACP and a tireless champion of equality, the award is one of the organization’s most meaningful tributes.

Williams has long exemplified what it means to be a committed and compassionate leader, and she joins a distinguished group of past recipients whose legacy lives on through grassroots activism and leadership.  Throughout her career, she has remained deeply engaged in the fight for racial justice and workers' rights. Her efforts to build stronger connections between labor and civil rights communities have made a lasting impact on the movement, and her continued advocacy is a testament to her unwavering commitment to social progress.

The RWDSU has long stood at the intersection of the labor and civil rights movements, with a proud history of fighting not just for better wages and working conditions, but also for racial and social justice. From supporting the March on Washington to championing anti-discrimination protections in the workplace, the union has always recognized that economic justice and civil rights go hand in hand. Williams continues this legacy every day – using her voice, vision, and leadership to advance the fight for equity, dignity, and power for all workers.
