Victory at Duane Reade: RWDSU Local 338 Members Win Raises, Bonuses, and Safety Protections
On July 1, 2025 RWDSU Local 338 members at Duane Reade voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract. Bargaining alongside Workers United Local 340A, RWDSU members faced months of little to no movement at the bargaining table. As rumors swirled about a hedge fund looking to buy Duane Reade’s parent company, Walgreens, members stayed united and focused on winning the contract they deserve. By bravely sharing their personal stories, members pushed management to finally move at the table.
The new contract includes 7.5% pay increases over the course of the three-year agreement, with the first increase retroactive to January 1 of this year. As members receive their retroactive pay, they will also receive a well-deserved bonus. RWDSU Local 338 leaders secured a tiered bonus system based on years of service, ranging from $250 for members with between six-months and one-year of service to an incredible $4,750 for members with 20 or more years of service.
In addition to securing pay increases and bonuses, the bargaining team protected and expanded crucial benefits. Pensions are not only protected but will see increased employer contributions. Medical benefits were also safeguarded, with no rollbacks. Importantly, for those working 30 hours or more per week, the employer will continue to pay 100% of the premiums. All employees will now also enjoy 15-minute paid breaks during their shifts.
For far too long, Duane Reade members have been on the front lines of the retail safety crisis. Throughout negotiations, RWDSU Local 338 members shared their stories of routinely facing physical and verbal abuse in their workplaces. No matter which store they work in, these members have experienced unsafe conditions. This contract has now secured a crucial Health and Safety Committee to address safety issues and hold the employer accountable.
RWDSU Local 338 members are excited to build on the momentum from this contract campaign. With the new Health and Safety Committee, they will continue organizing their co-workers to win real improvements that will make all Duane Reade workers – and customers – safer.
