Victory at ACC: Local 1102 Members Win New Union Contract for NYC’s Animal Care Heroes

RWDSU Local 1102 members at Animal Care Centers (ACC) of New York City — those on the front lines of caring for the city’s most vulnerable pets and strays — have won a new three-year union contract that reflects their essential work and unwavering compassion. The agreement was unanimously ratified on April 17, 2025 by the membership.

These dedicated members, who provide medical care, shelter, and a second chance to New York’s beloved Boroughbred animals, now have a contract that honors the critical role they play. The agreement includes higher wages, increased vacation time (front loading time at 3-years), increased paid sick leave (with the option for payout or rollover) and immediate paid leave for any work related injury, as well as additional equipment for safety and efficiency. All important wins that support a better work-life balance and a stronger, safer and more sustainable workplace.

“Our ACC members don’t just clock in—they care,” said Jack Caffey, President of RWDSU Local 1102. “They show up for the animals who need it most, and they deserve a contract that shows up for them. This agreement is a step forward for our members and the animals they serve.”

The fight for a fair contract was fueled by unity, determination, and the strength of RWDSU Local 1102’s policial work pushing for budget allocations in the New York City Council. Special thanks go to Shop Stewards Derrick Wong, Lenny D’Alessandro, and Jackie Matto and all our ACC members whose dedication helped make this victory possible.

Every day, RWDSU Local 1102 members at ACC who work as Animal Care Specialists, Behavior Team Members, Client Care Representatives, as well as Field Operations and Dispatchers at Centers in Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island provide comfort and care to strays, rescues, and surrendered animals, working tirelessly to give them a better future. Their compassion not only impacts the animals—they bring hope and support to the families and communities who welcome them into their homes. The union also has plans to welcome new members, at soon to open locations, in the Bronx and Brooklyn.

“At RWDSU Local 1102, we fight for those who care,” said Eileen Crosby, Recorder of RWDSU Local 1102 and lead on the contract. “We’re proud to stand with our ACC members as they continue making a difference for the people—and pets—of New York City. This win is more than just a contract, it’s a commitment to dignity, fairness, and respect for our long-time members.”
